31. MISCONCEPTIONS REGARDING CONTEMPLATION

            56. The creation may be broadly divided into two division, the animate and the inanimate. As the highest form of animate creation in this world is man, it may be inferred that the contemplation of his form is the contemplation of the highest spiritual form. Such is however not the case. The intelligence of man is operative only during the state of wakefulness. During dream it is under the sway of impressions, and it disappears completely when the condition of deep slumber is reached. The contemplation of the form of man would not, therefore, be the contemplation of a pure spiritual form, but one of a physical form possessed of a limited amount of intelligence and knowledge.

            57. If we think of the Supreme Being as an infinite expanse, something like the ethereal sky, and contemplate Him in that form, it would be merely a contemplation of a subjective conception derived from physical experience. A contemplation of this kind also is not, therefore, a pure spiritual contemplation.

  1. As brought out concentration on a formless God or on a physical human form will not provide success in spiritual practices. A living human being who has achieved complete self realisation if contemplated upon can guide the devotee in his spiritual practices and lead him towards redemption.
