3. PLEASURE AND PAIN

            4. As the final object of religion, as is referred to above, is the acquisition of supreme bliss and the complete elimination of pain, a detailed enquiry into the phenomena of pleasure and pain would appear to be essential for their correct comprehension and for the selection and adoption of such suitable means as would result in the attainment of the end in view.

  1. Human Being experiences the pleasure and pain only in the wakeful condition. Further, these pleasure and pain are dependent on the achievement / fulfilment of "desire(s)" which is / are fundamental. However, once one is having access to the nerve centre in the brain / mind, one will be able to change the situation on pleasure and pain. The access is obtained through Spiritual Practice.

    2. Please suggest, what is the definition of "experience" or "anubhav"? Should it be considered only in wakeful state or can it be considered in the state of dream also?

    3. Continuous change in state of mind may be termed as experience. These experiences are stored in our conscious, preconscious and unconscious or subconscious mind. These experiences are great driving force.

  2. Pain and pleasure are primarily psychological terms. I quote their definition from dictionary of psychology respectively: 1.A definite sensation not to be confused with unpleasant feeling. Some psychologists, to prevent confusion, prefer to use the term unpleasure as the opposite of pleasure. 2. The tendency inherent to all natural impulses or 'wishes' to seek their own satisfaction independently of all other considerations; according to Freudian theory the principle ruling the individual at the start, and remaining always as the guiding principle in the unconscious.

Pain and pleasure are basically the subject matter of psychophysics.
